This advice is based on what works well in Bonsall, Ca. (14 miles from the ocean), and Southern California in general. Others use other methods and do succeed growing them well. In general the number one rule for Adeniums and Pachypodiums is they do not like cold wet conditions. Below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, it is important to keep plants barely moist which will bring on dormancy. If nights get below 50 and you have a sunny window in your home where they can be kept, then they can be watered through the winter and kept growing. Adeniums are strictly container plants in our area, although the San Diego Safari Park Does have A. swazicum and A. arabicum growing on south facing D.G. in the ground. When I am told of a plant loss, 90% of the time it is from sitting out in winter rains. That being said , I have many plants that stay outside , as long as they are dry.
Above 50 degrees they should be kept outside where it is warm - full sun (same for Plumerias) when it is hot they can be watered often. we use a general purpose fertilizer for all our plants and avoid any high phosphorus / high bloom products. Potting soil should be a "Cactus Mix" - high in mineral content and course (Pumice and Perolite).
